VOLTA Rocketry Makes History: First Colombian Team Accepted to IREC in the COTS Category!
We at VOLTA Rocketry are thrilled to announce a milestone achievement for Colombian rocketry: We are the first team in the country to be accepted into the prestigious Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC)! And not only that, we will be competing in the challenging COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) category, aiming to reach an altitude of 10,000 feet.

What is IREC?
IREC (International Rocketry Engineering Challenge) is the largest collegiate rocketry engineering competition in the world, organized by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA). Every year, university teams from around the globe gather at Spaceport America in New Mexico to launch high-power rockets and demonstrate their skills in aerospace engineering. This event has become a global benchmark for the development of future aerospace engineers.

Why is IREC important?
IREC is not just a competition; it is a global platform that drives innovation and development in the field of rocketry. Participating in IREC represents an invaluable opportunity for students to face high-level engineering challenges. Below are some of the reasons why IREC is a crucial event for future aerospace engineers:
-
Tackling high-level engineering challenges: Teams must design, build, and launch rockets that meet rigorous technical and safety requirements, testing their skills and knowledge.
-
Fostering collaboration and learning: IREC promotes the exchange of knowledge and collaboration among students from different universities and countries, strengthening teamwork and innovation.
-
Connecting with the aerospace industry: The competition attracts the attention of renowned companies and space agencies, offering students networking opportunities and professional development.
The Impact of Our Participation in IREC
VOLTA Rocketry’s acceptance into IREC marks a historic milestone for rocketry in Colombia. This achievement is not only a recognition of the talent and dedication of our team but also has a significant impact at the national level:
-
Inspiring the next generation: Our participation in IREC will serve as inspiration for young Colombians interested in science and technology, showing that with passion and effort, great goals in aerospace can be achieved.
-
Positioning Colombia on the aerospace map: Competing in IREC positions Colombia as an emerging player in rocketry, attracting attention from the international community and opening doors to future collaborations with companies and space agencies.
-
Developing local talent: The experience gained by our team at IREC will strengthen the capabilities of VOLTA Rocketry and contribute to the development of highly skilled professionals in the Colombian aerospace sector.
As a research hub, our participation in IREC also drives aerospace research and development at our university and region. At the national level, this achievement represents a significant step toward the consolidation of a competitive and innovative Colombian aerospace industry.
A step closer to the stars
We are excited about this new challenge and are confident that our participation in IREC will leave an indelible mark in the history of Colombian rocketry. VOLTA Rocketry continues to work with passion to take Colombia to new heights in the aerospace field.
